My first question is Who's really the "Master" behind the Discover Card? Many thanks for any response. Another question I got... I am going to start credit repair starting January 1. Credit Karma says my score is 512. I don't know what my real FICO scores are but would love to know. A few recents baddies about 4, and about 7 baddies that are four and five years old, plus some Emergency Room bills that are sure to be appearing on there shortly only to make matters worse..

Somewhere on this board, I read you should opt out- then get old addresses removed then start the DV process. Well, if I opt-out, will I be able to get a couple of secured cards? There is no way I qualify for regular credit cards at this point, and sure I don't qualifiy for others like Kohl's, Target, Walmart, etc..

So...should I opt-out or not?..

Good question... I dunno what is the right answer to your question. I'll do some investigation and get back to you if I bump into an good answer. You should email the people at Discover Card as they probably could help you..

OPT-OUT PREVENTS.

SOME.

(NOT ALL).

"PRE-APPROVED" OFFERS FROM HITTING YOUR MAIL BOX.

Has nothing to do with applying for any credit card.

But it also.

WON'T.

Do anything to prevent any.

You may be opted "in" but just not getting offers. Preapprovals are less frequent than in past years and many Discover card companies are targeting affluent consumers and/or consumers with high FICO scores. If your siggy scores are correct you may have to until you get above 600 before you start receiving preapprovals...

I NEVER (ON PURPOSE) DID OPT-OUT.

I still don't get as many offers as I once did.

Well, I am not worried about pre-approved offers...my credit score is not worthy of offers. I was just trying to follow the steps in successful credit repair and opting out is step one..

If it doesn't prevent HARDS, then I see no reason to opt-out, especialliy if I can still get secured cards. Am Please help me understand if I am missing something other than the pre-approved offers?..

None of this has anything to do with the reasons why.

People involved in credit repair.

Need to opt out. People involved in credit repair have different issues than people who are not repairing their credit...

Thanks you, George. I picked 01/01/2010 to start because I plan to be done with re-reading the newbie section by then. there is so much info there, I am almost too confused to start. (sigh).

And no, I do not plan on applying for anything soon......other than secured cards..

Your issues didn't happen in one day...don't expect it to be fixed all in one day...or one month either.

Also remember that even if somebody did>A...B...and C and things were all better....

THAT DOESN'T AUTOMATICALLY.

MEAN YOU CAN ALSO DO A...B...and C.

And all your problems are solved..

Reading the newbies section is the best place to start, good job. There is a ton of information, no one understands it all. Just follow the first few basic steps:.

1. OPT OUT.

2. Name/Address Disputes.

3. JackAttack (Blanket Dispute).

Opting out and name/address disputes should be looked at as pre-req's to starting credit repair. Those two steps give you the best chance to maximize your credit repair success. After you send your name/address disputes out then you can research the JackAttack and send them out. The results of your JA will dictate the proper steps for your own credit repair. Everyones situation is different and the most important thing is to learn to use CB. When you learn to use CB, you can find any answer you need..

Start tomorrow with steps 1 and 2, they are easy. The ball will be rolling and your confidence will grow. Youre looking at the whole picture, focus on the steps. Steps 1 and 2 should not take more than a half hour of your time...

Do I need to CMRRR for the name/address disputes? Because One of the CRA's has my mom listed as my SPOUSE.

(I'm the daughter) and we don't even have the same last name nor have we had the same address in over seven years....

And I thought I read somewhere on this board to wait about a week or two after opting out to do the name/address dispute...just to make sure it goes through..

One of my kids was listed as my.

SPOUSE.

I fixed it over the phone with the CRA (if I remember right).

I guess it was because he was my only "AU" on one specific credit VISA card.

Back on topic:.

OP, I would suggest that you opt-out. As many of the posters have stated, it won't prevent you from being able to apply for a secured card when you get to that point in your journey. I would also suggest that if you are going to start in January (I'm starting my second wave then too) that you order new reports and purchase your FICO score; at least to establish a baseline for repair. Creditkarma and other FAKOs can be off by +/- 100 points...meaning your starting point could be better or worse than you believe. After your order your reports initially (this can be your annual freebie) then you will receive a new hardcopy of your report everytime you dispute. Pryan has a great "getting started" thread and if I find it I'll add the link to this post. Best of luck!..

If you get a PRM then you get a firm offer of credit. If you aren't getting any pre-approvals or invitations to apply, then there aren't going to be any softs...

Okay. Opting out it is. And yes, I am starting in January, but I ordered reports this past MArch, and I thought I had to wait a full 12 months to re-order free credit reports from annualcreditreports.com. And I need to find a discount to get my real FICO scores from MYFICO.com.

Thanks to all who posted. All the info was great as usual...

After opting out, how long do I wait to send in letters to CRA regarding removing old addresses?.

I read somewhere on this board to wait about two weeks for it to actually "take", then send in letters..

Anywone?..

I would wait until you see that all four show you are opted out..

Check back doors for ex, tu, and eq and get a paper report from IDS..

BTW, opting out won't stop CAs or junk debt buyers or help delete tradelines...

Back door refers to online access to your real report directly from the three major CRAs without paying (with Discover card) for the access. do a search for backdoor.

IDS is the fourth CRA and part of e-oscar..

Opting out is recommended as a first step by many people but frankly it does not do everything some think is does. it prevents prescreened offers of credit but it does not stop CRAs from selling your information to companies that have a fiduciary relationship with you, including CAs that "claim" to have a relationship..

Opting out does not stop JDB or skip tracers...

If you ever hit the right score, or mark, you might not get that card you want, or that is good, your screwing yourself from a possible good card, yet you will get more crap ones then good, but hey it's your choice!..
