First question I got is What's the song on the new Discover Card add? Many thanks for any response. My 2nd question... As soon as you got what card? You don't need a card to move funds... |
Hmm... I need to find out myself. I don't know what is the answer to your question. I'll do some research in Google and get back to you if I find an answer. You should email the people at Discover Card as they probably could answer your Discover Card question..
Exactly..
And they won't blink at a 50k withdrawal from an irate member of a few days, let alone bemoan the loss at their next CU board/staff meeting.. I would follow Yedgy's sound advice... |
I didn't want to invest in a bank that didn't invest in me. I had a feeling this might happen, that's why I'm so mad. I have only myself to blame...
URH.. my airline ticket is fully refunable. I'm not at a loss yet. I am just soooo mad. venting on here and having your support really helps. I just don't understand banks.

If you have this rational outlook, then why the irrational anger and actions? You're not serving your interests. This is just sensationalism...
Invest in you? They don't know you. You've been a member for a few days and have a deposit in a share account you could move out tomorrow. Sounds to me like you weren't that interested in an equal relationship with them...
I don't know. I have tired so hard to "fix" my credit. Maybe it's just me and alliant made me blow up? I don't know. Also, I just looked online and my Discover credit card app is back in pending status......
They're not a bank, they're a CU..
I don't understand why you're so mad. You have five collections on your credit report. That's all they have to go on. And it's not some evil bank they're looking out for, it's their members... |
Why not take out a secured loan with some of the $50K and throw it into a secured Discover credit card at another CU? Then you'd have the best of all worlds: high return on savings, low rate (savings rate + 2%) on a loan that causes no INQs and reports to all 3 CRAs, and a card at a CU that is willing to invest in you! After a year or so you'd probably have no problem being approved for an Alliant card...
My intentions were sincere, I promise, they have some of the best deposit rates. I wasn't showboating the money to get an account. I was merely trying to leverage a reason why they should give me one...
I don't think they offer secured products, anyone know?.
Great idea btw.. |
I would take a deep breath, get a refund and cancel your airline tickets and step back from the computer. IF you decide to take the funds out after all, NO reason to fly to Chicago. Waste of time and money...
I have seen a lot of dumb and irrigational decisions made. This without a doubt takes the cake!!! My advice would be to chill out and think this over again...
Yup! Just look under "Loans." They call it a "Savings Secured" loan. Couple that with a no-INQ secured card from PSB and blammo! 2 new positive TLs, a mix of revolving and installment, with NO INQs to worry about b*ing off!!!..
I'm trying to breath. I already canceled the airline ticket. My irrationality took over me......
I think you are making a huge mistake. Alliant doesn't give high limits to new members and the most you could get is a drop in a bucket compared to the other accounts you have listed. Leave the money there and cancel that flight. Move the money over to a CD and try again in six months or so...
Ok, CD rate is 3.5% @ 48m min. secured rate is 2%+div I would be getting close to 1% on my money. Also, I really don't need the installment loan, I have 5+ reporting already..
Who's in for a bank run on Alliant tomrrow??? I bet we could make front page news..
Somebody better call up and warn george bailey!!!.. |
Had not thought of that, but you are spot on with that. Sounds like crisis averted for now since he cancelled that flight. I'm going to sleep now!..
In that case, you can still carve out $5K to $10K and put it into a secured Discover credit card elsewhere. PSB pays no interest.
So you might want to look elsewhere unless you really want no INQ. Once you get your Alliant Discover credit card just cancel the secured card and throw the money back where the action is... |
Not only that, for what the OP was going to pay for airfare he could do a roundtrip to Europe...
On a off topic note, it's almost 12 midnight CST time for some Chase ID Pro COME ON *B..
All I have to say to this thread is: Paxil, Prozac, Zoloft, talk to your Dr, there are many more out there and he will find the best one for you...
Johnny, out of curiosity, had you travelled to Chicago and took the money out, what were you going to do with it? (And what happens when banks/CU puts a long hold on a large sum check?)..
I have some very nice friends in Chicago that could show him a really nice time...
So... going or staying?.
Just remember that whatever you decide to do, think carefully. Don't rush to poor decision/judgement... |
I'm going to call them in the morning. I hate flying to Chicago, so I doubt I'll go...
I am flying to DFW on Monday, maybe I can pick up your 50K for you and bring it to you on Monday?..
Scratch the showboat teenage-ish wounded ego response, 'i'm getting a first class ticket to go make a scene'..
Who could you possibly be impressing with that?. The denial is not a personal affront, no matter what you have done or not done to fix your credit. you have multiple collections. check yo'self, celebrate the progress you've made and continue to improve w/o becoming irate when you don't get what you want. it's unbecoming of an adult.. Congrats Johnnyt6 for coming here and venting and calming down..
Think about what is best for you and your 50,000.. Dang I wish that was all I had to worry about, what to do with 50,000.. Good Luck on your journey... |
Next time this happens keep in mind a couple of things:.
First, cash withdrawals over $10k triggers the IRS's interest in the form of a form called a CTR (Currency Transaction Report). You have to give your SSN and other personal information. Nothing illegal about large sums of cash, but I do think it increases your chances of an audit.. Second, the TSA has decided that in addition to stopping terrorists, they are also charged with being Barney Fife's in the form of stopping. All. Crime at the airport. There are tons of stories about people traveling with cash and having it "confiscated" at the airport because. Only. Drug smugglers. Carry large sums of cash. So you could find yourself with out $50K and a government receipt to show for it. I'm sure you'd have a fun time getting it back.. Lastly, What's happens if you get mugged?. Next time you're pissed, have the cash wired to another bank. Should cost less than $30. Will hurt them just the same... |
Step back and put this in perspective. Alliant has some of the best rates in the country right now. It's a good institution for liquid deposits. That's why I joined them ~ it certainly wasn't for their credit cards. I declined the low limit preapproved card. Alliant is very stingy on credit for brand new members~ even to those of us with great scores, no "baddies", and significant deposit amounts.
So, my advice is to calm down, let your money earn interest for awhile. Let time pass with them and if you really want credit with them later, revisit the option. If they are still unwilling to bend after months of your funds with them, then that is a decision they will have to make. Give you credit or let you go as a potential LT customer. Right now they have nothing to base their potential earning capability with trusting in you. Time is money, and leverage..... |
+1.
Leave it to Trevorhere (and others here to) to pull it all together in a highly well conceived, cohesive fashion. not for nothing Trevor, but you rock! and Johnny, I 'aint mad atcha, it sux being denied at any age, hope you are over the hump on this one. by most estimates you would seem to have a very bright credit present and future despite this relatively minor snafu. Lol, I haven't been a teenager for over 10 years. And the first class is a necessity not a show off. I'm a big guy and those coach seats don't fit me..
Trav, I understand. I guess, I just caught up in the moment... |
No one answered johnny's question..
Does Alliant offer a secured card? (good idea).. |
Read through both threads and all I can come up with is....
+1.. |
Towards the end of the join process, the offered a "pre-approved 25K auto loan and a 10K visa plat rewards card...
I just aked you in the other thread..
They seem to offer the card at $5k, $7.5k, and $10k to new members on the preapprovals. In my case it was $5k and that is my lowest limit. I figured I could work on them later. The rewards program isn't so hot but with the way the banks are going I'm glad to have it as a backup card... |
My top reason for not accepting the card was that I do not want a new account reporting. I may not make it through this credit "crisis" with entirely any CLD (or other AA) but there's always a chance I may. So far so good. Though, I do know I'll increase the odds of current lender reaction with a new account.
However if the "pre-approved" card was at least 30K I may have been more tempted.. I want to allow more time pass before I apply for any new card accounts. Wait until banks give up more paranoia.. This post has been edited by. TrevorHere. : 05 May 2009 - 10:10 AM.. |
That's why I haven't accepted Penfed's preapproved $25k PLOC. I've already been hit by BofA and I don't want to encourage more of the same. As it is I've circled the wagons and could get away with losing every commercial bank account. I'm not making any moves until this blows over..
From what I understand $10k is their max on the preapprovals at joining. Didn't know that they had gone down to $2.5k on some of them, so add that to the multiple choice.. This post has been edited by. Shawnee. : 05 May 2009 - 10:17 AM.. |

Listen to your inner voice! You know you want that card badly!..
Me neither..
But reading about a few of my CB friends with great credit receiving some CLDs other AA has numbed my finger for the time being.... This post has been edited by. TrevorHere. : 05 May 2009 - 10:20 AM.. |

It strikes me as so funny sometimes: the make-up of this board. I rec'd an 8k Discover credit card and was unreasonably (to many) thrilled. Someone else receives a pre-approved $300 store card and is over the moon. And some of y'all just put the rest of us in something close to shell-shocked.
Awe. , I think.. I only get a. Little. Envious sometimes, I swear... |
You get there eventually with good history. It wasn't that long ago that I was happy to get cards with limits over $1000. Heck, I was denied by Cap 1 three times!.

You know, I don't even care as much about available... I think my entire goal is to have a list of preapprovals from penfed that looks even a little like yours. LOL.
I'm so glad you all stick around, acting as inspiration. And Trevor's purty dog picture is always nice to see, too... |
Thanks shan. Credit is a growing process, but all of us continue to learn and share information. Even for those who have lots of good credit and seemingly do not "need" any more ~ we continue to help eachother stay on top of our credit and share info about offers etc. The credit world is constantly changing and the only way the consumer continues to keep an upper hand is by exposing pitfalls, lender behavior, bureau practices...all things that can have an effect on credit..
And of course CB is one of the best websites, period.. |
At today's rates, that is essentially throwing away a couple of year's worth of CD returns:.
[($2500/$50,000)x100]= 5%. Time to take a deep breath and swallow that lump of pride stuck in your throat, johnny. Don't cut off your nose to spite your face, man... |
I got a call this morning from a manager, I didn't feel like talking so I let it go to business vm...
What's the status of your Discover credit card application? Is it still pending?..
I would suggest you return the call...after all, you were all but demanding that they jump through hoops for you and now when they call to discuss the matter, you let it roll to voice mail. That is a GREAT way to piss them off to where they CHOOSE not to do further business with you. Rare is the instance that a CU needs the money THAT bad.....
Yes It was changed to pending last night. Still in the same status..
I didn't want them to go through hoops; I just didn't want to be 1 in 36 that was declined..
I really don't care if they are pissed off, I'm pissed. I don't want to talk to them because I'm still thinking irrationally... |
After reading all the positive reports on Alliant, I applied to join 2 weeks ago. I was approved for a 5K card and a 20K auto loan. The 5K card isn't my largest CL but it is by far my largest initial credit line on a major credit card, my previous high initial CL was $2,600 from HSBC in March of 2005.
This card also pushed my total available TL to over 50K, which may not be much to some but for me. Creditboards has been a major asset to me, a BIG thanks tp everyone esp those who are VERY active and very helpful... |
Fortunately Alliant doesn't approve 35 out of 36 that apply, not by a long shot. however, choosing to believe this falsehood sure may continue to support your irrational thoughts...
This is the most rational post in the entire thread..

Wow. I for one have never even heard of that website..
If all your info is from random third party websites, sorry, you are wrong. This post has been edited by. Squirrelgirl. : 05 May 2009 - 03:43 PM.. |

Yeah because even the CreditPulls database chronicles EVERY application made by consumers to a lender....
If you really believe that ANY lender that makes decisions using a credit report is approving better than 97% of the applications, then you might want to make sure the pipe gets left at home. TSA might frown on your attempt to get it through the inspection..... |
It's the "All about johnny's madness" thread.
I try to be a voice of reason, but it's his choice from here. 50K is not worth this customer's expense even for a day..... |
Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot.
Unfortunately it appears that your difficulties here may go beyond the scope of this thread if you are holding on to the patently false belief that 35 out 36 who apply are approved and as a result of this false ideology, you maintain that you are somehow being mistreated by Alliant.. I won't say it got weird because it started off weird.. |
I thought you sounded unstable last night, Now I KNOW you are unstable. After making such a big stink you bought $2,500 first class tickets, when a manager calls you back you ignore the call because you don't feel like talking? Wow. If I worked for Alliant and read this thread, I would mail you a check for your entire $50K and say thanks but no thanks, we don't want your business..
Harsh but true... |
Give it up Trevor, appears to me reasoning was lost @ the start of the topic!.

I can guarantee you that they don't approve 35 out of 36 applications. I know of at least a dozen Alliant declines that were not posted in the database...
I'm guessing VPofCredit..

I'm within driving distance of Chicago....
Would that offer still be open?.. |
I'm quite of aware of that Shawnee, I do search this board dailiy, I think I'm on here more than I should be...
Very nice topic for CB.
I would like to know more as well.. |
Are you aware that banks and CUs have no legal right to hold funds unless you have gone bad on a loan and they can invoke the offset clause? It appears your bone of contention with Alliant here is that you deposited $50k so why can't they give you a credit card? The answer is that they could give you a Discover card and the next day you could drain the funds. We've dealt with this scenario many times here...
That€™s simply not the case..
I told the loan officer my intentions. I even offered to sign a letter of intention. I have 0 revolving debt reported on my credit reports with 34k+ available credit. It does it make sense that I am going to deposit the money there, charge 2500, take my money out, not repay the debt, and run?.. |
WTH is a "letter of intention"? Doesn't change anything, a large deposit does not give you the "right" to a credit card. With all of the account you have been approved for I really don't understand the anger over a denial. As I said, they can not hold funds unless you don't pay as agreed. If you want a guaranteed card for that $50k go to a CU/Bank that offers them. You will be getting more like 0,5% though...
A letter of intent or LOI is a document outlining an agreement between two or more parties before the agreement is finalized..
"a large deposit does not give you the "right" to a credit card." I never said it did.. It's personal, more was said via telephone conversation that I didn't disclose here.. I tried the large Discover credit card thing, It didn't do anything to my score. I had 40k secured nrewards visa with NFCU if you read my signature a couple of months back.. This post has been edited by. Johnnyt6. : 05 May 2009 - 05:58 PM.. |
I see now. I finally understand. it is incumbent upon them to offer you a Discover credit card because you offered to sign a 'letter of intention' and have zero debt w/ 34k available.
My bad- but have you been paying (with Discover card) attention?.. |
Secured versus unsecured makes no difference to FICO..
Alliant is a credit union with $6 billion in assets. They're too big to babysit deposits for those that don't meet their credit standards. You didn't meet their standards so it's time to move on. Stop applying for credit and let those accounts age and the baddies fall off, that's the only way you're going to get where you want to go.. That's the reality of your situation. You seem too concerned with your score, five collections even though old enough to allow for a score over 700 is still a very high risk to lenders. Score is just one consideration. Five collections is a huge red flag to some no matter how old they are.. I'm through here, I've given you all the advice I can, prolonging this serves no useful purpose... |
Your forgetting about this: Baddies EQ(5) EX(21) TU(14)....from his signature..

What is your status with Alliant? Did you close your account? did they give you a card?.
This post has been edited by. Kevinkev99. : 07 May 2009 - 12:10 PM.. |
Your score doesn't say it all, particularly with the situation you're in..
You have multiple collections/COs over five years old. That will allow for a score over 700 but potential lenders still see those multiple baddies. Only a few lenders go by score alone, most others go by several criteria with score being just one of those criteria. Obviously Alliant goes by more than just score.. Let your accounts age and work on the remaining baddies or wait for them to fall off... |
They are looking at secured option for me. Visa.
Status is still pending.. Now down to 3 baddies. 2003 charge off Amex. 2002 cap1. 2003 midland collection... |
A picture is worth a thousand words, especially in this case...
