Quick question... What is better prepaid visa or prepaid Discover Card? Thanks for any comment. Another quick question... Without going into all the backgrounds and *whys*, my son needs a small private student loan for books and such beyond what his existing loans cover. He wants it to be deferred until after graduation. I am not in a position to give or loan him what he needs. |

Good question... I dunno what is the right answer. I'll do some Googling and get back to you if I find an good answer. You should email the people at Discover Card as they probably can answer it..

Sorry..phrased that wrong...work more hours?.
EDIT:. I just reread that and may have come across wrong. I worked my way through college with minimal financial aid (parents made too much money) and "work more hours" is sometimes the only option left. Have him look into workstudy, doing tutoring on the side, whatever it takes to earn whats left.. How much money are we talking about here?. This post has been edited by. The private student loan market has really tightened up in the past couple years. Might anyone else be willing to cosign? Has he talked to his financial aid office to see if they have any suggestions? Has his (or your, if he's considered a dependent for fin aid purposes) financial situation substantially changed since he last submitted a FAFSA? If so, he might be able to get an EFC adjustment and potentially qualify for additional federal aid...

He can also ask his professors if they'll allow him to use an older edition, buy an international edition off of abebook.com.
Or if there is one retained in the library for use ...there usually is if theyre particularly expensive. Also...I second the fafsa if it isn't already done. And I'm off to look up book 'rental" for my self in the future..great suggestion beli, thats a new one for me.. |

Depending on how long you need the book for you can save at least half of what it would cost normally if not more. My book normally sells for around 200 new at the college book store. Chegg had it for $51 because my classes are only 8 weeks. Substantial savings specially if you need a lot of books. A friend of mine recently went to Chegg.com and instead of paying (with Discover card) 500-600 for books she wound up renting them for 250 or something close to that..

Yeah, I will def keep that in mind for the future.
Usually my go to place is abebooks.com. But every once ina while they don't have what I need. FYI anytime I've gotten an international edition it's been exactly the same content, just softcover when it's a hardcover for instance and very cheap paper but nothing has ever been out of place, color pages are still color , measurements the same, pg numbers...etc.. |

Wow wish I would've known that when I brought this book! Lol. Will have to keep it in mind...

Just found out that the main book he needs most (which costs over $200.
) is customized for his school, so chegg is out, I think.. Just the concept of that irritates the you-know-what out of me... |
|
You'd be surprised. I'd still check it it out to rule it out...

I did an accounting course in college, where part of the cost of the book was 'membership' to their website, where the professor puts all of the assignments and quizzes. Of course the membership expires 6 months after you buy the book, so the book had 0 resale value. Talk about irritating !.
Has your son checked out craigslist for your area? They may have the 'customized' version for sale.. |

Has he thought of renting his books instead of buying them out right? Check out Chegg.com.
They even give you a packaging slip and tell you to save the box the books come in. It's actually pretty neat... |
