Got a question, hope someone can answer... What are your views about those stupid " priceless " Discover Card commercials? Many thanks for any comment. Second question.. Ok so here is the deal. I started my own business about 7 years ago and financed pretty much all of it from credit cards. |

That's a good question. I'm not sure what is the answer to that question. I'll do some research and get back to you if I got an answer. You should email the people at Discover Card as they probably could give you help..

If you are running $100,000+ a month through your business Discover Card card, then why not apply for a personal Discover card with AMEX? If the limit is low, call them and tell them about your 100K per month AMEX and see what happens. If you are running 100K a month through that card they should be giving you the black card...

Sounds like AMEX loves you so do the pre approval page and see what pops up, should be some good ones from what you state in spending habits with them already. Just add what card is the best and you will at least get a new positive trade line..
I can tell you from experience no matter how high your income and scores, if you have negative information on your report (even when it is paid) you are treated like a leper on auto approval sites and most card issuers. I am just posting this since it is not score driven auto approvals if any negative informations there.. My daughter makes ridiculous (high 6 figures) with zero debt and large savings. I went with her to buy a new Range Rover and we decided hey let's build some credit on her files and finance say 20 grand of a 60 grand vehicle. Guess what, 3 old paid student loans showing 60 days late when they were not even due all paid in full kept her from ANY finance except mafia type loans so we went the next week and paid cash for a new Porsche. The moral of this story is get rid of negative information while building long payment histories starting with any positive trade lines you can add!. BTW we tried for 7 months to get the incorrect information removed and no chance! I even hired a firm who stated they could do it and no go! So even if the file is marked paid in full if any negative information is there, it kills your chances of moving forward quickly. I then added her as an AU on 85,000 of prime positive trade lines and talked to someone again to see if it helps and the answer is a big no because any time there is any negative information someone looks at the file and it is really hard to get approvals with negative information even if it is paid or a low amount!. Under Obamas administration the first thing they did was make parents cosign or become the primary lender on all new student loans and no more low interest rates. I know form experience child 3 of 4 entered UM this year and I had to but my John Hancock on 53,000 in loans per year at 8.5 percent. Kids in college now are so screwed when they get out and the Sallie Mae comes knocking (so are the parents now)!!.. |

I've got a personal platinum, but not a "credit card" with them. I can do that though..
Black card, already had it.. |

Thanks for the info, luckily auto loans are easy as pie for me, I think my auto score is through the roof. Its getting credit cards with high limits that seem impossible. I'll look at the amex pre approval page, I didn't even know there was one. Ok I think I found it, but it led me to this page, which still basically says "Apply Now" on each one, did I go to the right page? Or is the Delta the only one I qualify for upgrading? And is there a hard involved?..

Looks like you are doing everything right and the only thing that will raise your scores and limits now is more TIME. I know you probably don't want to hear that answer but that's it IMHO.
Good Luck. This post has been edited by 800FICO1: 04 January 2010 - 11:42 AM.. |

I'm confused to what is even the issue. You have an old paid off CO but your score is through the roof. If you want a rewards card, go pick the one you like best. If you get denied and you can prove income, call them and ask for reconsideration. Yes, any app for new credit will involve a hard. Since you process so much through Amex already, it would seem like a natural place to go for a card..

From what I have learned from my Amex account is that they like you to use it and you are doing that.
So on my monitor I cannot tell what is showing on your preapproval page but your existing card you signed in from should show on the left hand side of the screen, then you look at the cards they display choosing the perks you are looking for and the screen should give you a few options to chose from. Pick one and the form should already be filled out and apply. If a rejection happens they will give you an option of viewing it and if you are rejected it would be due to time and limits on number of cards they would issue in a certain time frame. (it will soft EX) so does not hurt your reports anywhere.. From the preapproval page if you have one charge card now it can give you an instant decision of adding a similar card, upgrading an existing card or adding a credit card. They are time sensitive between applications and when I opened up my Hilton the preapproval page would show me all cards but the black for 3 months then they went away. I would think they would only reject you due to age of your existing accounts if they were under 6 months to a year. The reason I like Amex cards is that with AU accounts each card can be tracked for spending habits on line and you can separate those charges very easily.. Good luck!.. |

I'm looking at the amex cards and maybe the SPG amex might work better for me rewards-wise. Does anyone know if that's a card by amex or if it's by SPG? In other words, if it was amex it would take my history with them into consideration, but if it's SPG I'm assuming it would not. Thanks...

Nevermind, I see it's an amex card. Ok I thought I would give it a shot since the airline transfers are so versatile and I can also redeem for rooms. And whoohoo.. $30k! Hopefully that should raise my possible limits with future Discover card issuers too!!.
Thanks for all the help.. |

Congrats. I got approved for a new card today too, I'm very excited. But yours is better!..

CONGRATULATIONS.
But don't leave home with-out VISA and/or MC and/or DISCOVER. This post has been edited by GEORGE: 04 January 2010 - 03:54 PM.. |

Thanks, I won't/don't! But hopefully this should help me build up higher limits with other places too (so all my eggs aren't in one basket, the basket being amex), so I'm thinking my next card will may be a penfed/schwab or some other non amex rewards card..

...and I thought MY 3 x $25,000 (in 3 months) couldn't be beat (IMPULSE BUY)>AOR.
Too bad they needed 96.1% of what I had on 3 cards.. |

I have never, ever been denied for a purchase on an Discover Card CREDIT card. Charge cards yes, but credit cards no. As long as you don't try to spend more than your limit, they don't care...
|

Thanks! I'm happy. I got the card today and decided to rack up a bunch of SPG points by paying (with Discover card) part of my quarterly tax payment with it and now I've already maxed it out, the first day on the job I kinda wondered if it would go through for $29k as my first charge, but it did hah..
I called in to see if I could get a CLI and they said no CLI's for 60days, but that I could use my platinum or plum card instead but I said no I want the SPG points or else the officialpayments convenience fee wouldn't be worth it. So now gotta wait until the website lets me make a payment and then max it out again.. |
|
Cool. Can you pay the quarterlies on a Discover credit card without (much of) a fee?.
I'm kinda in the same boat you are in except more baddies and tax lien. All old though. HNWI/high income but my credit was so bad last year the CAs didn't even bother to call. 12 months ago I didn't even have a credit score. One closed old line and the rest were baddies. I didn't even know this since I hadn't applied for credit in 20 years.. You didn't make the same mistake I did and closed all your CCs, paid your mortgage, and lived off a debit card/cash. The only good thing out of it was that there was no way anyone would steal my identity... |
|
About your credit, if any that you had were Amex they will show the original date as open date so that will help you a ton if you open another amex..
No the fee part sucks! It's 2.35% (~1.50% if 'expensable'). So I only do it because I figured the redemption ratio for SPG points are around 3% and AA miles around 2%.. Here's the method to my madness:). Let's say you owed $160,000 in taxes. With the 5k bonus on 20k transfers (transferring several times) from 160,000 points, you'd have 200,000 AA miles.. I just did a redemption flight check for 2 people from ORD>LAS>ORD and a normal rate check for the same flight. It was $3086 for first/biz class and $1662 for economy non restricted. Those are 80k SPG for the econ flight and 160k SPG for the first/biz flight. The redemption ratios for the SPG points come out to be 2.07% for the economy unrestricted and then 1.93% for the first/biz tickets.. So if the official payments site charges 2.35%, and if you are able to expense all of that on your business tax returns, let's say at 35%, that takes the convenience charge of the official payments site to 1.53%.. And if the airline miles are "tax free" under Announcement 2002€“18, then you have come out ahead - 1.93%/2.07% - fee 1.53% = 0.40/0.54%. And do that a few years or also use your spg for more miles and you'd also be on your way towards lifetime gold (or platinum)!. I dunno we'll have to see if I do it from now on or not, I got the accountant's approval of it today. He said I could expense the fee on next years tax return and the airline miles are not taxable... |
|
Yep, that makes good sense. It's not a lot of money but better than nothing..
I once had a gold amex but they just canceled me in the 90's. I wasn't late with them but I hadn't used it much. Also, since I hadn't applied for credit for over 15 years they had no idea of my current job. I'm sure the last one they knew about and was listed in my credit report was one I leflt over 10 years earlier.. Probably the biggest mistake I made was not getting a WF Discover credit card since I had banked there for decades and they kept sending offers. When they sent me a Visa branded debit card I just started using that and stopped using my other CCs. Eventually, even WF stopped sending me Discover credit card offers. Then I bought a new home (for cash - no loan to report an address change) , moved, and when I went back to pick up 6 mo mail there were 3 utilities that I forgot to shut off. They had been closed and sold to CAs. Apparently, my new home address didn't appear on the credit report for years even though property transfers are public records.. I was pretty much a flake for not closing the accounts or at least filing a change of address with the post office which would of caught the odds and end of people I hadn't notified.. But I paid my bills when I became aware of them.. I've been diversifying my assets between rental property, venture angel investing, PMs, and cash. Got a Citi secured for 25k that pretty much takes care of my Discover credit card needs and it's CD pays a sweet 4% APR. I'd sure love to find a secured 250k card that payed half that... |

The new SPG is reporting the $30k limit whohoo!! And it says it was opened in 2001.
So any ideas what my next card should be? I did recently open a citi forward card because of the restaurants and amazon purchases but that limit was only $7300. It hasn't reported yet.. Should I cool it for a bit? The citi is/will be the only new account in years, per the reports atleast.. Inquiries past 12 months:. EX - 5 (mostly from amex, now frozen). EQ: 1 (alliant removed the duplicate INQ for me!!!). TU: 0 (nobody seems to pull this!). Any suggestions? Looking for higher limits, and a rewards card with a higher limit is even better Also preferably a EQ or TU puller... |
|
I've only skimmed through the thread, so I apologize if I'm being redundant.... But most Discover credit card companies use an industry-enhanced scoring methodology. You mentioned you used CCs to build your business. Were you ever late on these? If you have a late payment history on your credit for previous credit cards, it could explain why they aren't giving you higher limits.
Also, are you opted out? That might also be a reason you aren't being "pre approved" for bigger product lines.. Just a thought...... |
