Shopping for a Bedroom Set

by Forest on August 18, 2010

Bird and I are currently sleeping on the full-sized bed I’ve had since college and we’re using a dresser that was passed down from her grandparents so it’s at least fifty years old.  It’s about time we upgrade and move our existing stuff into the guest room which now sits completely empty and unappealing to any guests.

With that in mind, we embarked on a shopping trip last night to scope out bedroom sets.  We visited three stores and were a little overwhelmed by the wide variety and the range of prices.

We’re basically looking for a complete set: queen bed, dresser, mirror and nightstand.  We saw sets priced anywhere from $500 to $3,000.

Here are three of our favorites and we’d love to hear your thoughts.  Cast your vote in the comments section and I’ll write another post later that includes our opinions on each one along with the prices.

Option A:

Option B:

Option C:

If you have under bed storage for both, I’d vote for Option B. The darker color is nice, would probably hold up well, but I always trend toward more storage options.

I know it goes against your the consumerist nesting instinct, but Craigslist is really a great option. You can just watch for a set you like. We got a solid wood dresser for $100.

If I were buying new, I would go with Costco.

I think Option A is beautiful!

I love the second set. We have a similar situation — we’re also using a hand-me-down bedroom set from my grandmother that’s 50 years old or so — and it’s formica-topped. But we’re still not ready to spend on a bedroom set (need a couch, TV console and coffee table first (our table is currently being held together with duct tape wrapped around a broken leg, haha).

I love Option B! Dark wood looks really stunning in my opinion. Plus extra storage is always a plus. :)

I absolutely love the lines of option A. that would be my vote! we’re currently using my husband’s bachelor furniture. it’s okay i guess, but very boy-ish. i’m looking forward to upgrading in the near future!!!

I personally like Option B the best, however it would honestly come down to price. They’re all relatively similar (emphasis on relatively).

I also used to kind of look down on Craigslist shopping, mostly because it seems like a hassle. However, ever since my BF started looking at Craigslist postings for nice furniture at cheap prices I’ve changed my mind about it. Check it out for a couple of days, and if that doesn’t work out you can always go buy a set brand new somewhere.

I vote for Option B. I like the basic lines and I prefer longer, deeper drawers in a dresser. I don’t think I’d get as much use out of the short drawers along the top in Option A or from that middle compartment/short drawers in Option C.

And as mentioned earlier, gotta love the built in storage option under the bed.

I like C the best. I love the headboard! Although I like the bed base of B.

I second Craigslist. We got a solid wood headboard and bed stand with drawers for $20 and $50 respectively. We LOVE them both, and they match well even though they came from two different people.

I’m a longtime reader and thought I’d chime in on your post since I know a lot about the furniture industry (I work in a tangentially related field). I’m curious to know how you did your research to narrow it down to the three choices. There are many brands and styles and price points so I can see where you’d get overwhelmed!

Any of the three look great, but I’d just recommend to take your time and buy something you really love and could reasonably use for years. Pay a bit more for a upper mid-tier brand with quality materials, construction, and a durable multistep finish.

Good luck!

Thanks for the comment! Um, research consisted of visiting the three local furniture stores and looking at all the furniture :)
