My first question is Is it safe to use credit card(visa or Discover Card) abroad? Looking forward for any answer or 2. My 2nd question... Okay, long story short:.

In February 2003 I ran up a $900 cell phone bill in one month. I was young and stupid. I decided not to pay it. As you would imagine, it got bounced around a few times and eventually went into collections (which I of course knew nothing of, I just assumed I'd never be a Verizon customer again). Finally in 2006, the ever so notorious Midland Credit Management got a hold of me, and I stupidly and blindly agree to pay it in full without an agreement to have it removed from my credit report when it was done. So, in July of 2006 I paid it off to MCM in full..

I found this on a google search which was a comment left by nice people such as yourselves:.

Under the Running of Reporting Period - Section 605 [15 U.S.C. 1681c] this paid off collection will remain reported for a total of 7 1/2 years from the date of delinquency. The date of delinquency still refers to the original delinquency with the original creditor, regardless of when the collection agency began working the debt. This includes debts that have been bought by a collection agency. Collection agencies cannot legitimately "re-set the clock.".

Is there any truth to that? Can I use that as a leverage to get it removed from my report for being obsolete? Or almost obsolete in this case. I've read success stories of people getting their negative remarks removed 6-8 months ahead of time by just saying to the CRA that it's "obsolete"..

Anyone have advice on this? I've actually sent DVs to MCM in the past and they never respond. I'm willing to bet that they don't have my original signature for my cell phone from 2002 on file, so I thought DV would be the way, but they never respond with anything. Should I call them if DV is the way to go?.

Thanks everyone for looking at this and for your help...

Yep, but you might want to make sure and wait for another commenter to confirm this as I am not very confident. Better yet, why don't you email the Discover Card guys because they can assist you better...

Every paid collection I had (4) were removed from my first blanket dispute to the CRA's. All the collections were 3-4 years old...

Dispute with the cra...but be warned MCM is a beast. They make it their job to ruin people (just like all CAs only worse!).

For future reference though, Cell phones fall under UCC and have a 2 yr SOL..

+1 with MCM being "the devil"..

They *just* verified a PAID COLLECTION with a Closed Date of 12/04 as somehow also an OPEN account..

EQ thinks that impossibility is just peachy and happily reported it as verified...

I agree with the rest - dispute with the CRAs..

If you have paid the debt to the CA, they are no longer required to answer a DV. You can send it... but just be aware the FDCPA, which is what allows consumers to send DVs, does not apply to paid debts..

Attack the tradeline... see if you can get it off that way. Worst case is you only have another 8 months or so before it should just fall off due to age..

Okay, so I'm going to start with a Tradeline dispute. Should I do this via the web form? Regular mail? All of the above? Should I do it with all the CRAs?..

UPDATE:.

I sent a dispute to TU using their ONLINE dispute system. I sent two disputes:.

Verizon and MCM as OBSOLETE.

Other accounts showing late payments in the last 40-some months.

My results were definitely favorable. MCM was DELETED completely, although Verizon still remains.

3 of the 5 late payment accounts were changed to reflect zero late payments in the history of the credit (hooray!)...

I'd dispute it now...pick the TL apart...find the errors in it (and there ARE errors in it) and use that as the basis for your dispute.

If it's verified (50/50 shot IMO), then dispute it again as obsolete..
