Got a question... How long to get a Discover Card replaced overseas? Hoping for any answer or 2. Another question on my mind: Just received my home/img/avatar5.jpg's bill for the year: it's up nearly $100. Here's what they wrote:. |

I would like to know the answer too. Anyone here know what is the answer to that question. I'll do some poking around and get back to you if I bump into an good answer. You should email the people at Discover Card as they probably know..

I understand your point, but I guess after being a longtime policyholder with them - for both auto and homeowners - I didn't expect an increase. Even eight bucks a month. It is a little disheartening when you've never made a claim, you've been with them for years and years and you get an increase..
What are the "certain incidents over the past few years?".. |
I can recomend amica.
I always insurance shop within an month before policy expiration.. |
The lack of claim does not mean that no increase will ever occur even with spotless credit. Inflation hits the insurance industry just like every place else in the country..
Remember those little bits of wind and rain that affected the Gulf Coast over the past few years and resulted in LOTS of cash being paid out? THOSE affect policy holders ALL OVER the country. Ditto with firestorms in California or large-scale winter storms in the North East that result in payouts.... The company is going to recoup those losses through increased premiums systemwide... |
I understand. Not sure I'd call them "incidents' - perhaps "catastrophic events" might be a more applicable term...
I was being facetious. It is the same as when I told people about my golfing in East Texas being interupted in the fall of '08 because of some wind and rain in September of that year (Ike)...
Yeah, I know, I got it. It didn't really play to me because I lost a friend in New Orleans during one of those incidents...
I concur. Amica is a very good company as far as customer service and paying (with Discover card) claims fairly when and if you actually need them. I would also recommend Middlesex Mutual...
Shop around, I have been with Allstate for close to 20 years and my rates have consistently gone DOWN, not up...
Wow! Thanks. I have about a little over a month before my policy expires so let me take a look. Really appreciate the recommendations...
I'm with Progressive for auto/home which I have been happy with so far. Haven't had to actually file a claim on anything, so my recommendation really only applies to the price..

I don't know if you have military affiliation, but USAA offers low rates on insurance. I don't own any of their policies, but many members praise them...

Insurance pulls are not hard pulls..
I have State Farm, and they seem ok. I switched from Travelers last year and it went down about 20%... |
That is not an absolute truth. While some companies might not do a hard pull, the reality is that SOME do. As such, it remains an element that someone ought to be cognizant of if they are shopping around....
Other things to consider are that, like with auto insurance, rates will vary based upon where in the country one lives. Cheap in Florida could be the company that is most expensive somewhere else while the gouger in California might be the cheapest carrier across the country. Do not also forget that some companies offer discounts when they carry multiple lines for the policyholder (ie. car and home)... |
Insurance pulls are not hard pulls. It's possible an insurance company is pulling the wrong type (New Credit)..
Insurance pulls are special in that they aren't supposed to show in the hard pulls section but they are supposed to be visible to other insurance companies... |
Keep in mind also that other things like material costs factor in as well, which have nothing whatsoever to do with you the policyholder and their financial situation, but does affect what they would expect to payout in a claim...

Score is not everything. Fortunately the banks are beginning to realize this and adjust. Risk assessments OUGHT to be looking at more than a three-digit number..
As to insurance premiums, the risk modeling is even different. But the reality is that they have taken a collective bath due to certain incidents over the past few years and are looking to recoup funds whereever they can. Eight bucks a month is hardly a big deal IMO. Be forewarned that shopping around will likely result in you getting hit with more inquiries which may further drive up your premium from another carrier..... |
