I'm stumped. I'm not so sure what is the answer to that question. I'll do some research in Google and get back to you if I got an answer. You should email the people at Discover Card as they probably could give you an answer..

When I moved in 2008 I had a Nat City checking and I needed to open another (chose BoA, Actually) because NC has no branch presence down here.
I left a little cash in it to cover any debits that I had forgotten to cancel or update. I also kept it open because, hey, I go back to Ohio a lot, and it might come in handy. After a couple months I stopped checking it regularly. Then, I stopped at all. I got Dunned a few months later. I owe NC $400? What?!. So I check it out... There was a scheduled transfer to move money from my Checking to Savings. Every week, that transfer fired off. It tried to move cash into my savings. There wasn't enough in my Checking to cover it. So it moved what *was* in my checking, then triggered Overdraft protection and moved the money back from my savings to cover the overdraft. It did that every week like clockwork, reducing my cash by $10 to cover the ODF. Then it ran out of money and I was getting hit by $39 fees. Finally the account was automatically shut down around the $400 mark. I couldn't believe their computer would initiate a transfer from an account w/o sufficient funds! I called the 800# first. I could not communicate the idea that, hey, hold on, *no money ever left NC.*. There is no counterparty involved. This is a runaway NC Computer!. Finally, I had to call and handle this with the branch manager in Ohio that opened my account. I could not believe it. It was such a pain! And then I had to ensure that Allied Interstate was notified and the notation removed from Chex. Moral of the story: I will always close accounts in person and with confirmation... |
