First off, Help plz!!!!I I have a Discover Card from city bank, how can I activate securecode? Thanks in advance for any comment. Second question of mine... I'm not sure why I should compare USAA to a credit union... |
Hmm... I need to find out myself. I don't know what is the right answer. I'll do some research in Google and get back to you if I discover an useful answer. You should email the people at Discover Card as they probably can help you..
I just called them and the CSR said the AMEX card is not for non military members yet when I try to apply online, it allows me to...
When in reality, their cards are "not really anything to write home about". I have MC and Amex since 06. Nice with limits though...
The CSRs seem to be a bit behind on current events....some know about the change and some don't. Best to apply online if you're interested...
Hmm, I wonder if that's because of the big change in their membership expansion to all veterans. I was just reading about it here:.
Https://www.usaa.com/inet/ent_blogs/Blogs?action=blogpost&blogkey=newsroom&postkey=cyberspace_abuzz_over_usaa_s. I know their cards are not the best out there, but If I can contribute to a good company, I don't mind a all. Maybe as their membership grows, they will be able to offer better rewards & cash back programs... |
Except they don't. NFCU isn't all that easy to get into unless you have military affiliation. USAA makes it's banking products available to everyone (likely a legal requirement for a FSB), but has better "tiers" for military, and offers insurance only to military and those affiliated. Neither's doors are wide open..
"red headed stepchild" isn't whining, lol. We accept that USAA has tiers, and those of us who are non-military members don't get their best offerings. It's just our way of saying we're "Non-P&C Eligible Customers" with a little humor added. We're not always serious and dry around here... |
I don't object to the term (it's one I use) I'm more objecting to the folks complaining and trying to find backdoors...
I don't see any sense in complaining either if USAA wants to offer better services to Military that's A-OK with me. The problem is they aren't consistent in where they draw the line, often it depends on what CSR you get..
There really aren't any backdoors to the restricted products- either you qualify, or you do not. Backdooring your way into insurance coverage would be stupid anyway, you'll regret it when you have to file a claim and they discover your shenanigans.. The questions tend to revolve around things like deposit-at-home, or Amex cards, that some RHS's are told they don't qualify for, while others have no problem getting... |
USAA has a generally not-for-profit mentality and, from my perspective, tends to operate in the best interests of it's members. To me that seems more like a credit union than a for-profit bank...
USAA has operated a Credit Union since 1955. USAA Federal Credit Union, recently changed their name to United San Antonio Community Federal Credit Union, (United SA) and expanded membership from USAA employees to anyone living or working in Bexar county..
I always thought it was odd for a Bank to run a CU for it's employees. Why don't they just use the bank?.. |
AWW you BADDD influences!!!!!.
I already told myself no more new apps this year. But I've been a USAA member all these years and read about all these "step children" drama, now when a barrier seems to be finally removed credit wise (I don't really care about their insurance products anyway since I'm almost 100% sure they will not be able to beat my current rates), that and the fact that I just recently got "B" on my EQ, and the fact that it's such a spirited season of the year, and plus a million other excuses.... I pulled the trigger on a cash rewards world Discover Card (which seems to be really the exact same card as the AMEX version, just different network). Instant $15k approval at 10.99%.. I've had the rewardless version of the Discover Card with a CL of $25k for 4 years now. They just recently delined my CLI request with a hard citing "maximum credit extended" about a month ago.. Will they snatch it back? Only time will tell.. BTW anyone knows how this card reports? "Flex spending" or normal revolving?.. |
Well what about family members? I can put out a list of family members who served. I worried when my three cousins, and BIL was fighting in the gulf war. I cried when we lost life. I like NFCU because they will allow me to join because my brother served in war time. or my sister who is about to for the first time. USAA will not allow me to do that. My mother see no reason to join USAA ( my grandfather served during wartime) So I cannot join unless it is as an red headed step child...
You should probably take it up with USAA, since they make the rules, not other members..
Don't see what good can come of thumbing your nose at other contributing members who are deemed eligible by USAA standards, whether or not wartime military... |
Looks like I can't get any loans with them besides the CC. Every time I try for one it says "This product or service is unavailable due to eligibility requirements, state or foreign restrictions, or other information drawn from your Personal Profile". I was going to switch my checking, savings, but I think I need to look one that can offer me more. I still might get their Discover credit card one day...
So how do you feel about those of us who qualify for "all" benefits of USAA including insurance because our parents served? It was never as exclusive and you thought!.

Congrats! If the USAA CSR I spoke to is correct, you can still move limits between cards, so just consolidate the two card limits into your World MC...or move as much of the $25k CL as they'll let you transfer over...

Thumbing my nose.
= my being a veteran and you are not? When you ride an aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf for a year, or plant your boots in Iraq then come back and post. I'm sure your outlook will be a little different.. Besides, not too concerned anyway as I do not use their products as much anymore. I have MC/AMEX, and auto insurance (as long as their rates do not increase like homeowners I had).. Everything else is something you can find anywhere else.. NAVY FCU is better than them hands down. (Except the website).. This post has been edited by. Hinklesc. : 29 November 2009 - 03:41 PM.. |

You have no idea whether I or my family are veterans or not, I am ashamed by your lack of decorum..

You have no idea whether I = No..
Be ashamed all you want. The place I come from teaches me I should be proud of my military and war service... |

I hope these are not officers posting, because they are certainly no gentlemen...

FYI for years you didnt have to be affiliated with the military in ANY fashion and you could still get in USAA. You had to be a resident of Bexar County and that was a loophole since the beginning. I never rode around in an aircraft carrier in any waters nor did I plant my boots in Iraq. But Ive been a member of USAA since 1985 and will be one till I die...
We're just going to drop this line of discussion, and go back to the original topic of more credit products being available to the general public...
I'm a "Non P&C Qualified Member"I can't apply for cards, loans or any banking products online, but they've been happy to open them up for me when I call. I have one USAA MC and have had 2 car loans with them in the past..
Have you tried calling?.. |
Really? Each time I called and asked for specific loan types, I was told that I had to:.
1. Have a credit product. 2. Be eligible to have a auto or home insurance policy.. Maybe I should open a Discover credit card and let my membership age... |
I opened my Discover credit card before I applied for any loans, so you may be right...
Thanks op now I can change my signature.
Got a very nice limit too can't wait for it to get here. Now if only I could do online deposits like dcu. Whats quickest and free way to transfer money to checking and time length before funds are available?. This post has been edited by. Razdigital. : 30 November 2009 - 03:13 AM.. |
Congrats! What a great signature change it will be, too!.
Wish I could answer your question, but I haven't really transferred any money to USAA so far aside from initial deposits. My everyday banking is through NFCU. Hopefully someone else can answer you, though... |
Are you eligible to set up ACH thru USAA? When I transfer funds from an outside account (after initial setup) the funds are available immediately..
But then again, I also have Deposit@Home and Deposit by Phone (iPhone app) as a full member... |
Thats how I do it and I love it. Just used deposit by Iphone the other day and it's SO COOL!!!!..
They should have deposit @home open to all members but features such as deposits with iphone restricted to military and insurance driven accounts that way would allow non members to make USAA their primary account and give USAA more liquid funds..
I wouldn't mind a restriction of 1K on the @home deposit a day while military affiliated are unrestricted. I guess ACH was setup when I transferred funds for the initial $25 deposit, hopefully available funds are quicker after this transfer.. Not too worried DCU has the @home deposits I an do an ACH transfer through USAA from them... |

I qualified for Navy through my grandpops. But previously wasn't eligble for military eligibility with USAA because of their date of service restrictions/grandpops was Navy..
I'm wondering if maybe I could possibly achieve military benes now with USAA's expanded eligibility(and granpops info), and if so does that mean I have to encourage grandpops to join first?. Has anyone been able to go from step child to blood relative this way with the new rules?.. |
Unknown to me, Both of my grandfather are dead, My Father is dead, and my mother will not join...
I have the Platinum MC, wonder if Penfed's auto loan is cheaper than USAA Bank auto loan?..
Don't think so. Everything reads "parents" and "spouse", not "family members" like Navy..

I signed up as a non-military member in August. Suggested that my mother (separated from the Air Force in 1955) join and check out their auto insurance policy since she was complaining that GMAC doubled her rates when she turned 75. She wound up saving $500 per year through USAA and transferred her insurance to them effective 12:01AM this morning..
Yesterday I had no insurance eligibility but today I logged into my account and found that I was eligible for all products insurance as well as everything else. So, once the military benefits kick in (and it has to be membership with an active qualifying insurance product), you should be eligible as well provided that the blood relationship is an acceptable one.. BTW, turns out that USAA's auto rates are $400 per year higher than my current insurance and their homeowner's rates are 100% higher than mine are now. But, it's still nice to have the option... |
Time to work that bad influence on the family USAA membership drive. Grandpops joins>Trevor's parent joins>Trevor's USAA golden membership upgrade..
Edit to add: Feel free to suggest to Grandpops that he do a Wang and Tang adoption, please.. This post has been edited by. TangMeister. : 30 November 2009 - 02:40 PM.. |

UPDATE:.
I logged on to USAA today, and I am no longer offered the rewards World MC and Amex under credit cards. Back to just the standard non-rewards MC. Is this a snatch-back or a system quirk to be remedied?. USAA....you're great but you really need to get your self together.. Edit to add: I'm also offered the "Military Group" card, which seems to have the Air Force affiliation. Supposedly, that affiliation is what prompted the opening of all cards to all members. Hopefully, we'll know the story soon enough. If you click apply, this card states: "Your application for the Association of Graduates U.S. Air Force Academy World Discover Card will only take minutes to complete.". This post has been edited by.
