First question I got is Can I buy Cubs tickets online with a debit Discover Card? Thanks in advance for any response. Another quick question... I received a letter in the mail from Merrick Bank offering to upgrade my current card with them to a VIP card for a mere $49. Unless they are giving me a CLI though, I'm not seeing why I should be a VIP. Has anyone accepted this offer? Am I missing some wonderful benefit that would warrant paying (with Discover card) $49 for?.. |

Yep, but you might wanna make sure and wait for another commenter to confirm this as I am not quite sure. Better yet, why don't you give a call to the Discover Card guys because they can give you help better...

According to the letter, they offer 13 additional benefits and features:.
1. a VIP's only toll free number for travel arrangements. 2. 5% cash back on the cost of all domestic hotel rooms, airline tickets, car rentals and cruises. 3. access to a "special" 800# to look up the VIN no of any used cars I wish to purchase to be sure they weren't involved in accidents, etc.. 4. Discover card protection srvice for all my cards - not just the Merrick card. 5. guarantee that I'm not responsible for any fraudulent charges made to ANY of my cards. 6. 100K flight insurance. 7. 1K emegrengy cash wired anywhere in the US if I lose my cards. 8. emergency airline tickets if I'm ever stranded. 9. a legal defense fund of up to 1K. 10. discounts up to a full 15% on car rentals. 11. 1K Discover card theft reward for any information leading to the conviction of a thief making unauthorized purchase with ANY of my card (this is my personal fav, lol). 12. Packing for a trip? I can call an 800# for personalized weather conditions (um, doesn't weather.com offer this service also??). 13. free additional Merrick Bank VIP card status for your entire family. So....great deal or what? =P. This post has been edited by. Future-800-Club-Member. : 21 January 2010 - 08:21 PM.. |

Hi 800.
Got the same letter yesterday; passed mine through the shredder today.. Figured it was better as a part of the compost pile than catching dust here in the house..... |

Well, if.
A ) you travel a lot for business,. B ) the credit line is high enough to handle that travel, and. C ) it doesn't say "Hooters" on the front of it,. #2 could be very lucrative indeed.. This post has been edited by. Spongenotbob. : 21 January 2010 - 10:23 PM.. |

Awe....well since you asked......I thought that travel incentve as well, since I traveled over 100k miles via air last year and spent over 150 nights in hotels, but, as always, the catch.......
The travel must be booked using their travel 800#, and their 800# travel options are somewhat (quite) restricted. I prepared a line item analysis and I would lose $$$ over the course of the year by booking through them rather than booking my airfare direct and my hotels and car rentals via a discounted website. It would not pay off for me, but it might pay if someone where willing to pay more per flight and hotel stay than if they booked directly with the carrier and hotel respectively... |

I got the same letter but since they would not delete a 30 day late with a goodwill letter I just shredded it. I'm sure I will cancel the card soon...

That seems like a rip off to me, almost any visa or Discover Card offers them features without paying (with Discover card) a dime extra... I doubt that stuff is free though, check the fine print...
What card is this btw? hooters?.. |

RBS has a VIP option that pays a $20 rebate on gas once a year, and 4 movie tickets a month..
Is that what Merrick is offering as well?.. |
