Today is payday and it’s the day that my $700 bonus got added to my paycheck. After taxes, I netted just over $379 more than usual. I know I complained last week about getting a bonus and not a raise, but today I’m even more appreciative of the bonus because I survived another round of layoffs yesterday. My department lost 4 more employees in what was the third round of layoffs in the last 1.5 years.
In other news, my work from home dream has been officially put on the backburner because the department doesn’t have the budget for it, however, I did finally get issued a laptop as sort of a consolation. Now I can work from home during blizzards rather than having to risk my life and waste my time trying to get to work. This is a small step in the right direction and I’m thrilled about it. It’s also one small step towards working from home which I think will still happen eventually, just not any time soon.

I’m not sure if congratulations are the appropriate response to surviving another round of layoffs, but if they are…! Glad you’ve got the laptop, though, it’s definitely a step in the right direction if only to preserve you from freezing in a blizzard on the way to work.
My dream is to work from home, too, Forest. My company is OK with working from home in inclement weather, although I wouldn’t say it’s encouraged. Last year I was in the top 5 finalists for a work-at-home job that would only require travel to one of my favorite cities in the country a few times a year. I was so, so disappointed when I wasn’t chosen. So, for now, my 45-minute each-way commute from the city to a mind-numbing exurb continues…
Hang in there!
Thanks! I just got the notice from IT that my laptop will be built tonight so tomorrow morning I should be good to go. Now I’m just praying for a snowstorm so I can try out this whole telecommuting thing! Let’s hope this Winter has at least one more left in her. Though I guess I wouldn’t complain too much if it decided to warm up and become Spring.
Sorry to hear about the layoffs – seems like the dark days will never end sometimes! But it definitely makes you grateful for small blessings, like a laptop
